Dedication Ceremony for Baugh Center for the Visual Arts at UMHB

GSC Architects was privileged to participate in the dedication of the new Baugh Center for Visual Arts Building on the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor campus on Friday, October 19, 2012. The Baugh family, core supporters of the educational mission at UMHB, was very generous in their comments on the appearance of the building. Dr. Randy O'Rear, UMHB's President, and Ted Barnes, Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts, spoke of the success of the building's design for the Visual Arts program.

For GSC, the Visual Arts Building is one of two current projects at UMHB; the other a new Nursing Education Building. Below are some pictures from the Ribbon-Cutting and Dedication Ceremony as well as members of our design team.

Touring the Texas Advanced Computing Center

Beth Guillot and I visited the UT Advanced Computing Center on the JJ Pickle Campus in Austin, Texas on Thursday August 30, 2012.  It was very interesting to hear about the design process for this complex project and how the facility operates. The project was funded with a national grant of $50 million.

It is estimated that Stampede will rank as one of the top 5 supercomputers in the world once it is fully completed.

Below is a little more information from the TACC tour as well as some photos:

“The Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at the University of Texas, Austin, is a research center for advanced computational science, engineering and technology. TACC deploys and operates advanced computational infrastructure to enable computational research for researchers in Texas and across the USA. Dan Stanzione Ph.D of TACC will present on the supercomputers and the challenges of operating one of the highest density data centers in the world. We will also tour the Ranger supercomputer, supporting infrastructure, and TACC’s newest project Stampede which is nearing completion. The Ranger supercomputer was built in 2008 and is one of the top 40 supercomputers for both private and public institutions. The Stampede project is projected to be one of the fastest supercomputer in the world. Both the Ranger and Stampede projects are served by cutting edge mechanical systems. You will have an opportunity to see up close an installation that supports +30kW per rack and the new Stampede project which will operate at over 45kW per rack. We will also feature a fluid submersion cooling solution for data center servers.

The Tech Specs:

• 30kW and 45kW Per Rack Installations
• 415V Modular Touch Safe Distribution
• In Row Chilled Water Cooling
• Hot Aisle Thermal Containment
• Fluid Submersion Server Rack Cooling Solution”

RR PIE School Supply Distribution Event

A handful of GSC employees and family members volunteered at the RRISD Partners in Education school supplies distribution event on Friday and Saturday, August 17th-18th, 2012. My sister and I were assigned as greeters, and directed students and parents to the appropriate areas. It was fun to see the kids excited for the school year to begin, especially the proud pre-k kiddos. The RRISD Partners in Education did a great job with organizing the event and making sure things were running smoothly.

A big thanks to RRISD Partners in Education for all that they do for the students.

GSC Presents at NeoCon

img_2345_small

Julie Zitter co-presented at NeoCon 2012 with Qena McCarty of Aqena Inc. on a CEU presentation titled "Designing Better: Lactation Accommodations". The topic content focused on defining a new program standard. The design of these facilities is becoming more commonplace and mainstream, but the current guidelines are not suitable. GSC and Aqena Inc. have been collaborating on this topic for over a year and a half and are designing an all-in-one product solution that will answer the new program standard.  Check out our presentation by clicking on the arrow below.

Medical Education in Texas

Our clients are often a tremendous source of inspiration for us. I recently attended a Round Rock Chamber Event where Dr. Nancy Dickey, President of the Texas A&M Health Science Center and Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs for The Texas A&M University System, addressed the challenges that Texas faces in growing healthcare providers. We were encouraged to know that Texas medical education institutions are responding to the need to grow their programs; which is a tremendous achievement considering the investment that is required of the institutions and the communities.

Happy Holidays from GSC Architects

We believe strongly in cultivating community, whether it's through designing built environments or just doing our part to contribute to our surrounding community.

This holiday season, in lieu of sending holiday cards, GSC Architects opted to make a donation to a community organization that is near and dear to our hearts.

The Meals on Wheels and More organization gives back to our community by providing hot, nutritious lunch time meals for people who are homebound and living with disabilities. This is one of many services Meals on Wheels and More provides which help make it possible for their clients to stay healthy and living in their own homes. For more information on how you can be a part of Meals of Wheels please visit thier website by clicking here.

Happy Holidays.

Fort Hood Chapel Achieves LEED Gold Certification

We recently received confirmation that the Fort Hood Chapel Complex & Religious Education Facility has received LEED GOLD certification.

The original goal was to achieve Silver certification, but the team was able to achieve Gold with no additional cost to the Government. This is an unprecedented feat and was no simple task.  It also is the first LEED Gold certified building on the Ft. Hood base.

Special recognition goes to our team for buckling down and finding those hidden opportunities.

2011 AIA Women's Leadership Summit

Being a female leader in architecture can be challenging at times.  However, there are also many amazing opportunities to share experiences and be inspired by other women in the industry.  This year’s AIA Women's Leadership Summit on September 23rd and 24th was one such opportunity.  The event was held in Kansas City, MO.  This was my first trip to Kansas City and it was a pleasure to discover the inspirational architecture that creates the fabric of the city.  The city's revitalization investment has paid off in a BIG way.  As part of the summit, we were able to participate in private tours of the new Kauffman Performing Arts Center, a Moshe Safdie / BNIM project and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, a Stephen Holl / BNIM project.
