GSC Architects joined an Austin team of industry professionals to donate our time and skills to create a new and inviting low-barrier family shelter that will provide a safe haven and on-site services for approximately 664 vulnerable adults and children each year. Working with a collection of artists, architects, designers, and corporations, the GSC interiors team took charge of the corridors, entry vestibule, and reception, and created cohesive areas between those completed by different design teams. Wayfinding via bold colors and the “Flowers of Texas” theme painted on the walls by muralist Angela Effenberger lead families around the facility and three different wings named the Paintbrush, Bluebonnet, and Yellow Rose. The Salvation Army is working to end homelessness and move families into affordable housing, to bring each guest to self-sufficiency and independence. The Rathgeber Center will provide case management services, meals, wraparound services, spiritual guidance to our families in their deepest hour of need, providing a short period of rest from their difficult circumstances and concerns. We are so proud to be part of the great Austin community who poured their heart and soul into the project to help the Salvation Army’s amazing team make an extraordinary new place.
