The AISD Gorzycki Middle School creates a landmark and community center for the area, capturing the unique views of the surrounding rolling hills and Austin skyline, while blending with the natural environment of the site. As you make your way through the building, you notice each major corridor is identified with a unique color, leading you to the central Library and Commons space at the heart of the building. This space is the trunk of the wayfinding tree and from there, four classroom wings branch outward; capturing grades 6, 7, 8 and Special Education. This project is an achievement of sustainable design on many levels, obtaining a 3-Star Rating from the Austin Energy Green Building Program for its unique use of natural light and reduction in site disturbance. The visual connectivity between spaces throughout the school was a crucial factor in achieving the sense of community between the students and faculty. The concept of creating a usable hub for the community organizations was important in designing shared areas that could be used for non-school related conferences and events.
